Platinum-group metals (PGMs) have a dreary long-term outlook due to the electrification of cars, said Jeff Christian, managing partner at CPM Group.
"In a long, long-term perspective, precious metals, platinum, palladium, and rhodium, have real risks of finding that the future of automotive technology obviates the need for PGMs," Christian told Kitco News on the sidelines of the IPMI Precious Metals Mobility Symposium.
Christian noted that the transition to an electric vehicle economy is a long one, and the risks to PGMs will only be significant over the next few decades.
"The enthusiasm about electric vehicles and the expectations that you see, especially in the lithium and cobalt industries, are a) misplaced, and b) too enthusiastic. These are technologies that are going to take a long time to be introduced, if in fact they succeed in being introduced," he said.
