(IDEX Online) - One of the world's largest sapphires, an exceptional-quality blue 118.35-carat gem, is to be sold by Phillips Hong Kong, with estimates of $3.2m to $4.5m.

It is one of the largest sapphires offered at international auctions in the past three decades, and has been awarded 98 out of a maximum 100 Gubelin points for its "highly impressive size and weight, combined with an attractive blue color and purity." Only gems graded above 90 are considered "exceptional".

The sapphire, from Sri Lankas, has been set by Bulgari in 2004 in a platinum necklace with tapered baguette and pear-shaped diamonds.

"This necklace's clean and sleek lines, elegant geometry, and the unusual horizontal setting of the Sri Lankan sapphire are all elements that afford this necklace a timeless modern appeal," said the auction house. "It is a work of art that embodies a miraculous and singular occurrence in nature."

The necklace is being sold from a private collection and will lead the Hong Kong Jewels & Jadeite Sale (live and virtual) on 23 May.
