After dwindling throughout 2019, Turkish exports of reinforcing bar to the United States surged during the first half of 2020; Fastmarkets examines the domestic and global factors that limited those shipments - and drove their return.

Turkish rebar exports to the US through the first six months of 2020 reached 231,569.9 tonnes, accounting for 44.4% of the total 521,002 tonnes of rebar shipped to US shores from around the world during that period, according to the latest license and Census data from the US Department of Commerce's Enforcement and Compliance Division.
The January-June total is more the three times the volume imported from Turkey during the final six months of 2019, when 54,841.4 tonnes of Turkish rebar arrived in the US. During the second half of 2019, Turkish material represented just 11.5% of the 476,696 tonnes of US rebar imports.
Favorable US construction outlook pre-pandemic
Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic sending shock-waves through the US economy, the domestic construction outlook was favorable enough that it incentivized a renewed interest in Turkish material among US buyers.
