5G rollout to drive tantalum demand post Covid-19, industry figures say

The implementation of fifth generation (5G) technology will be the primary demand driver for tantalum after the Covid-19 pandemic is resolved, panelists said during a Tantalum-Niobium International Study Centre virtual conference this week.

"Tantalum is driven by connectivity and 5G implementation will be the primary demand driver going forward," Travis Ashburn, senior vice president at Kemet Electronics, said during a panel discussion on the future supply and demand outlook for tantalum and niobium in the post Covid-19 era on Monday October 12.
"5G, machine learning, edge computing, automation and electrification will be the megatrends for 2020 and beyond," Renzo DeMeo, senior consultant at Prismark Partners, said during a session on the tech hardware and the electronics supply chain. "In spite of the slowdown in 2020, the long-term growth looks positive."
