Bank Earnings Highlight Holiday-Shortened Week

For the second time already this year, Wall Street looks ahead to a holiday-shortened week. However, that's not to say it will be a quiet week, as earnings season begins to rev up. A handful of financial companies will step up to the plate, with the likes of American Express (AXP), Bank of America (BAC), Goldman Sachs (GS), and Morgan Stanley (MS) headlining the bunch. Dow members IBM (IBM) and UnitedHealth (UNH) will also report.

Below is a brief list of some key market events scheduled for the upcoming week. All earnings dates listed below are tentative and subject to change. Please check with each company's respective website for official reporting dates.

On Monday, Jan. 15, the U.S. stock market will be closed for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Tuesday, Jan. 16, the Empire State manufacturing survey will kick off the abbreviated week. UnitedHealth Group, Citigroup (C), Comerica (CMA), and First Republic Bank (FRC) will kick off earnings releases.

Wednesday, Jan. 17, will be busy, with industrial production data, the NAHB housing market index, the Fed's Beige Book, and Treasury International Capital data all due to come out. Chicago Fed President Charles Evans, Dallas Fed President Robert Kaplan, and Cleveland Fed President Loretta Mester will all speak. Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, Alcoa (AA), Fastenal (FAST), and U.S. Bank (USB) will report earnings.

Thursday, Jan. 18, brings housing starts, weekly jobless claims, the Philadelphia Fed business outlook survey, weekly crude inventories, and the Fed's balance sheet to the table. American Express, IBM, Morgan Stanley, BB&T (BBT), JB Hunt (JBHT), and KeyCorp (KEY) will report earnings.

On Friday, Jan. 19, the Baker-Hughes weekly rig count and the University of Michigan's consumer sentiment survey will close out the week in economic data. First Horizon (FHN), Kansas City Southern (KSU), Regions Financial (RF), Schlumberger (SLB), and SunTrust Banks (STI) will report earnings.
