Brazilian slab export prices down on US quota issues

Export prices for Brazil-origin steel slab went downward in the week ended Friday May 10, with buyers and sellers negotiating over the final batches in the annual quota for the semi-finished product to be imported into the United States.

Fastmarkets' weekly assessment of Brazil export slab prices dropped to $520-540 per tonne fob on May 10, from $540-550 per tonne fob a week earlier.Offers to the US were reported at $530-540 per tonne fob, but sources on the buying side believed that these prices were negotiable in a range of at least $10 per tonne."Producers were trying to maintain the same price as in past deals, at $545 [per tonne fob], but buyers are now looking at $520 per tonne fob," a source said.Brazilian producers were...
