RAPAPORT... Christie's will auction a special collection of jewelry by designer Anna Hu, with the proceeds going to support healthcare workers fighting against the coronavirus pandemic. The sale of the three pieces will benefit Diamonds That Care, Alrosa's new social-responsibility initiative. Hu is in the process of creating the jewelry using brown diamonds from Alrosa's Yakutia mines, Christie's said Wednesday. "We are living in a different world, where old divides are no longer important because we all face the same threat," said Alrosa CEO Sergey Ivanov. "By working with Christie's, which operates in all the regions affected by the coronavirus, and the brilliant Chinese jewelry artist Anna Hu, we are raising funds for a US-based charitable organization supporting activities in various countries. This project is a living example of how countries and stakeholders can unite in their efforts to help those in need."The miner organized the project together with Diamonds Do Good, a nonprofit previously known as the Diamond Empowerment Fund, which helps develop diamond communities and empower local citizens in those areas.Hu's creations that will go under the hammer July 3 to 13 include a necklace featuring a 27.02-carat, fancy-brown-yellow diamond, surrounded by fancy-color and colorless diamonds and set in 18-karat white gold and 18-karat red gold. An 18-karat red-gold ring with a 1.59-carat, faint-brown diamond, and fancy-color and colorless diamonds, will also be up for sale. The third piece in the auction is a pair of earrings, each containing a pear-shaped diamond weighing 3 carats."Many people are in distress, and no one can remain indifferent to this pandemic," said Hu. "The world needs positivity, empathy, a sense of support, care and love. I hope to express all these feelings in my three pieces of jewelry."
