DRC president starts talks with miners over proposed mining code changes

Representatives of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) mining industry are to start discussions on the mining code with the country's government following a meeting with the DRC president this week.

The purpose of the meeting, which took place on Wednesday March 7, was to clarify certain aspects of the country's proposed new mining code. The code was passed by both houses of parliament in January but still has to be signed by DRC President Joseph Kabila before it becomes law. As it currently stands, the new code would bring an increase in taxes and royalties and would scrap the stability clause, which prevents changes to the fiscal and tariffs regime for 10 years.
