(IDEX Online) - The manager of a diamond factory in Surat is reported to have killed himself after he was allegedly tortured while in police custody.

Local media say Mukesh Sojitra had been accused of stealing diamonds from a company named as Parin Diamonds, where he worked. He had denied the claim.

The dead man's brother said Sojitra was severely beaten by police officers to obtain a confession over the missing stock of polished diamonds, and went on to take his own life.

The officers alleged to have been involved are now under investigation. Police are taking statements from workers at the factory, and are examining CCTV footage and the post mortem report.
