Environmental probes extend impact on Inner Mongolia NPI production

SHANGHAI, Jun 1 (SMM) – High-grade nickel iron pig (NPI) production in Inner Mongolia remains under pressure from intensive environmental protection initiatives across the region since regular production resumed in March, SMM learned.

In March, 2,892 mt in nickel content of high-grade NPI were produced across the region. The figure shrank 4% to 2,769 mt in April and  another 4% to 2,655 mt in May.

SMM believes that output is likely to extend its decline in June as Inner Mongolia is involved in the first round of inspections of rectification works.

During the environmental probes by the central government in 2016, 17 ecological problems were found in Inner Mongolia. By the end of 2017, 124 people were held accountable, of which 27 are department-level officials.
