New York spot gold rose $7.00 to $1,311.60 on Thursday. The TSX Venture Exchange fell 0.86 point to 771.25 while the TSX Gold Index added 1.66 points to 191.50. Detour Gold Corp. (DGC), which had a rough time last week, dropping over $5 to a low of $9.11 on its revised production and cost guidance, was stronger today. It gained 37 cents to $10.47 on 3.92 million shares.
Barry Coughlan and Nelson Baker's Mineral Mountain Resources Ltd. (MMV) slumped to an intraday low of 31 cents, ending the day down 22 cents to 38 cents on 6.49 million shares. The slump followed news that the company has received "analytical results" from three of a planned 12-hole drill program at its Standby mine target in the Rochford district of South Dakota. (It is referring to assays; highfalutin language is often a precursor to down-to-earth results.) The assays included 2.8 grams of gold per tonne across 6.1 metres from the third hole of the program and two grams per tonne across 3.2 metres in the first test. The second hole yielded 1.1 grams per tonne over 6.4 metres. These new assays compare (not so well) with historical results that produced 3.36 grams per tonne across 24 metres and 10.23 grams per tonne over 3.05 metres.
