Higher solar panel import duties in the US to provide limited support to silicon prices

Silicon metal prices in the United States will find limited support from US President Donald Trump's decision to impose hefty duties on imported solar panels, industry sources said.

While the measure could encourage local production and consequently have an impact on the demand for silicon, the key driver for the metal's price will be the final determinations on the trade investigations of US silicon metal imports from certain countries, the sources added. American Metal Market assessed spot US grade 553 silicon prices at $1.40-1.42 per lb delivered on January 10. But market participants are reporting offers and deals at $1.43-1.45 per lb, and mention higher freight costs, strong demand...
