(IDEX Online) - A jewelry store worker fired gunshots after two raiders armed with hammers started smashing display cases.

Nobody was hurt in the attempted robbery at Gold Estate Jewelry in downtown Palm Springs, California, USA.

Palm Springs Police Department said it was initially unclear who had fired the shots, but they were later able to confirm it was an employee. They are still investigating the circumstances and are appealing for information.

In a separate incident, thieves fled with $100,000 of jewelry and cash after cutting a hole in the wall of a business at a strip mall on Staten Island, New York, and removing the safe.

New York Police Department is hunting four suspects believed to be responsible for the 5am raid, three of whom are pictured.
