Metals industry welcomes new EU trade defense instruments

European non-ferrous metals industry association Eurometaux has welcomed the release of new details about EU controls on the dumping of cheap metal and ore on the trading bloc's markets.

"We commend EU institutions for reaching a long-awaited agreement on trade defense modernization," Eurometaux director general Guy Thiran told Metal Bulletin."Overall, the new measures will strengthen the anti-dumping and anti-subsidy instruments for Europe's non-ferrous metals industry, although we concede that the package is not as ambitious as we originally hoped," he added."It is nevertheless a big step forward that metals producers will be able to make use of the new lesser duty rule [LDR] waiver under certain conditions," he said.The LDR was mandatory under EU anti-dumping legislation, and required the EU to calculate a dumping margin and an injury margin and subsequently to apply the lower of these as the rate of duty.Thiran's comments came on Wednesday January 23 after the European Parliament's international...
