(Kitco News) - Anglo American said todaythat it has set an ambition to achieve carbon neutrality across its controlledocean freight activities by 2040, with an interim 30% reduction in emissions by2030.
The company added that thisambition is aligned with the goals of Anglo American's Sustainable Mining Plan,which include achieving carbon neutral mining operations by 2040 and anambition to reduce Scope 3 emissions by 50% by 2040.
CEO of Anglo American'sMarketing business Peter Whitcutt commented, "Connecting our customerswith the metals and minerals they need in a way that is safe, efficient andsustainable is a key priority for us, so our ambition for carbon neutralcontrolled ocean freight is a natural extension of our commitment to be carbonneutral across our mining operations by 2040."
"We are committed toplaying an active role in accelerating the transition to a more sustainableshipping sector, a crucial component in our efforts to extend our positiveimpact beyond our mine sites. This ambition further cements that commitment andwill help us shape a clearer path towards decarbonization," he added.
Anglo American said that vesselretrofits, the use of voyage optimisation software, and support for technologydevelopment to help enable the switch from conventional fuel oil to sustainablemarine fuels are all part of the company's efforts to decarbonise ocean freightactivities.
Anglo American is a leadingglobal mining company producing diamonds (through De Beers), copper, platinumgroup metals, premium quality iron ore and metallurgical coal for steelmaking,and nickel - with crop nutrients in development.
