Rare Gold Rolex sets Online Auction Record

(IDEX Online) -  An extremely rare gold Rolex Daytona sold for $1.5m, a record high price for a watch in any online auction.It fetched almost twice the high estimate of $800,000 in a week-long auction by Sotheby's, in London. It also set a record for highest price ever paid for a wristwatch in the UK.Only 10 examples of the Daytona JPS (John Player Special) Ref. 6264 in 18k yellow gold are known to have been produced.The 1969 watch (pictured) took its name from the legendary 1970s Formula 1 team, with its distinctive black and gold livery.The manual-winding, 17-jewel example attracted 17 bids from five bidders, smashing the pre-sale estimate of about $400,000 to $800,000.
