Rotterdam aluminium premiums hit fresh highs on renewed liquidity

European aluminium premiums had a record day Friday April 13, with market a return to full market liquidity one week after the United States Treasury sanctioned Russian company UC Rusal, the world's second-biggest aluminium supplier.

A surge in liquidity and a continued scramble for non-Rusal material helped to push the Rotterdam duty-unpaid in-warehouse aluminium premium up by 20% to $125-140 per tonne, from $105-115 per tonne, in one session on Friday. It was the second day in a row that the premium had increased.One deal was reported at the top of the range on Friday, and another just below the range, while market participants raced to secure and sell metal.The price of duty-paid aluminium in Rotterdam on an in-warehouse basis...
