(IDEX Online) - The Swiss Gemmological Institute (SSEF) has said its Automated Spectral Diamond Inspection (ASDI) device performed with 100-percent accuracy in an evaluation by the Diamond Producers Association's ASSURE testing project.

The ASDI device, which was first released in 2014, can screen 6,500 small diamonds an hour.

The testing was carried out by UL Verification Services, Inc., an independent laboratory in the U.S. The testing sample comprised 1,000 natural diamonds, 200 diamond-simulants and 200 lab-grown diamonds, including stones created through HPHT and CVD.

Although the ASDI can test stones as small as 0.85 millimeters (0.002 carats), the test sample only included stones with a diameter ranging from 1-3.8 millimeters.

The DPA ASSURE program is designed to standardize the effectiveness of tools and special equipment for diamond identification.
