Space Force to Defend Against Chinese and Russian Satellite Threats

I used to think Stephen Colbert was funny.

But then I realized he was a partisan hack. He, and a slew of other media personalities, has made that abundantly clear during Trump's presidency.

They're down if he's up. They're black if he's white.

It's reflexive opposition without consideration of facts.

Trump has done many bafoonish things, no doubt. But some good things have come about this presidency as well. Babies and bathwater and all that.

A prime example for me was when Trump announced the Space Force as a new branch of the military.

Partisans made fun of it. They called it a waste.

Colbert belittled it, calling it "to infinity and beyond stupid."

But if you talk to anyone who actually knows something about it, you'll see the Space Force was a desperately needed addition.

So I thought it was funny when astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson defended the Space Force on Colbert's The Late Show, saying it is necessary for satellite protection, asteroid defense, and the cleanup of space debris.

Or take it from Congressman Mike Rogers: "If people could fully understand the threat we have today from Russia and China, they would understand how serious this is and how important it is to protect our space assets."

Or Jim Bridenstine, head of NASA: "As a nation, we are so completely dependent on space to the point where our adversaries have called space the 'American Achilles heel.' And these adversaries are now developing capabilities to deny us access to space. If they succeed, they could bring this country to its knees. We need a separate force that can focus exclusively on space given how important it is to the American way of life and how it is becoming more contested every day."

I'm a libertarian, so I'm not seeking entanglements.

But this is asset protection that could ultimately prevent human combat and loss of life.

In fact, a Pentagon report out just this month warned that China and Russia are both developing space lasers that could target and destroy U.S. satellites. Russia deployed such a system last year, and China is likely to have one by next year.

We use those satellites for everything from navigation to intelligence gathering to keeping track of North Korea's nuclear weapons program.

And would-be enemies aren't stopping there.

The Pentagon also warns that China has an operational ground-based anti-satellite missile that can shoot down satellites from Earth. And the report also said China and Russia are developing so-called "kamikaze satellites" for in-space warfare.

This comes just as China became the first nation to land a probe on the far side of the moon.

It's no secret that space defense has become America's Achilles' heel. We're all but defenseless against these new technologies.

But the creation of the Space Force is a step in the right direction.

What's more, America - as she always does - is developing new technology that will soon be world-leading: new rockets and propulsion systems the likes of which you've only seen in the movies... until now.

The future of war will be on the final frontier.

And there are otherworldly profits to be had as the transition is made.

Call it like you see it,
