U.S. equity index futures were lower this morning. S&P 500 futures were down 6 points in pre-opening trade.
Index futures were virtually unchanged following release of economic news at 8:30 AM EDT. Consensus for Weekly Jobless Claims was a dip to 226,000 from 233,000 last week. Actual was a dip to 231,000. Consensus for the April Philly Fed Index was a drop to 20.1 from 22.3 in March. Actual was an increase to 23.2.
First quarter earnings reports continue to pour in. Reports released since the close yesterday included Alcoa, American Express, Bank of New York Mellon, BB&T Banks, Blackstone, Canadian Pacific, Danaher, Keycorp, Philip Morris, Procter & Gamble, Quest Diagnostics and Snap-on.
American Express gained $3.45 to $98.60 after reporting higher than consensus first quarter sales and earnings. RBC Capital and Oppenheimer raised their target price on the stock.
PayPal added $0.16 to $80.50 after Susquehanna raised its target price to $86 from $79.
Alcoa advanced $1.95 to $61.35 after JP Morgan raised its target price to $86 from $79.
Kinder Morgan added $0.38 to $16.55 after raising its dividend.
