Al Capone's Patek Philippe Sells for $223,000 (His Favorite Gun Fetches $1m)

(IDEX Online) - Al Capone's diamond-encrusted platinum Patek Philippe pocket watch has sold for for $229,900, way above its $25,000 to $50,000 estimate.The watch - no longer working - is set with 90 single cut diamonds (.02-ct each / VS / EF).The condition report said: "Not working at present time. Dial is yellowed. Missing minute hand. Some rust on center post."It was among 174 lots sold by auctioneers Witherell's in a sale entitled A Century of Notoriety: The Estate of Al Capone (Live), in Sacramento, California, USA.The most expensive item sold was the crime boss's favorite gun, a Colt Model 1911 semi-automatic .45 pistol, which went for $1m. The estimate was $100,000 to $150,000.Many lots, including other jewlery items sold for way above their estimates.A 14-karat white gold and diamond monogram "AC" pendant sold for $82,280 (estimate $2,500 to $5,000). And a platinum pocketknife, set with 20 single-cut diamonds to spell "Al," fetched $78,650 (estimate $2,500 to $5,000)His diamond tie bar set with 21 single-cut diamonds, each .005 carats, VVS, and D, E, or F in color, sold for $22,990 (estimate $2,500 to $5,000)Capone, who died in 1947, has become the most collected historical figure in the criminal world.The entire collection passed from Capone's widow Mae to the couple's only child Sonny Capone and then to his daughters.
