Alrosa Announces Biggest Diamond in a Decade

(IDEX Online) - Alrosa has announced its largest recovery in a decade - an irregular-shaped diamond weighing 390.7 carats.

The sanctioned Russian miner said the gem was recovered at its Mayat mine, in Yakutia, by its subsidiary Almazy Anabara.

"The discovery of one of the largest diamonds in Russian history is undoubtedly an unprecedented event and an excellent finale to the 2023 mining season," said Alrosa's news CEO Pavel Marinychev on the company's Telegram channel.

The 390.7-ct stone was, he said, "without a doubt, a record holder both for our company and for the country's diamond industry".

It is the largest gem-quality diamond recovered since a stone weighing 401 carats was found 2013.

The diamond, described as a light crystal of irregular shape, bordered by a yellow-brown halo, was found together with a large, regular-shaped colorless diamond, weighing 37.7 carats.
