(IDEX Online) - Bosses at Anglo American are donating 30 per cent of their earnings to coronavirus charities.

Board directors and group management committee members have made a three-month pledged, which will total more than $1m.

The company's Anglo American Foundation will match their donations dollar for dollar.

Anglo American is one of the world's largest mining businesses and is parent company of De Beers.

Chief executive Mark Cutifani (pictured) said: "Anglo American's board directors and group management committee members have agreed to donate 30 per cent of their fees or salaries for three months to their personal choice of COVID-19 related charities or funds."

He also announced that in addition to the $25m it has already given to COVID-19 relief worldwide, Anglo American was donating $3m of aid to South Africa, in recognition of its particular hardships.

"We all applaud the heroic and selfless efforts of so many people - within our company and far beyond - to help others in times of human crisis," he said.

"We are all endeavouring to play our part to address the health issues and hardships caused by the pandemic, but also to make sure our people are safe and our business is ready to support the economic recovery phase that will be so crucial in so many countries."
