The news brief contained no reference to any public statements from Barrick or AngloGold regarding AJN's proposal. Nor did it include any comment from SOKIMO.

Mining Journal has been advised by legal representatives of Barrick Gold that "whilst the article reflects the press release issued by AJN Resources Inc on 6 February 2020" it did not mention "SOKIMO's contractual obligations to the Barrick and AngloGold Ashanti groups of companies".

"These obligations prevent any sale or otherwise transfer of shares held by SOKIMO in Kibali Goldmines SA, the owner of the Kibali gold mine, without prior approval from Barrick and AngloGold Ashanti," Barrick's legal note said.

"It is not Barrick's intention to approve of any such sale or transfer."

Mining Journal has asked for AngloGold Ashanti's position on AJN's public statement.
