Plans by OZ Minerals to expand copper output could be more ambitious than is currently appreciated with investors likely to quiz management this week at the company's annual strategy day about speculation that the new Carrapateena mine in South Australia could double in size.

While still at least 18 months away from first production, Carrapateena is the mine being built to replace the ageing Prominent Hill project which is located in the same copper-rich region which also hosts BHP's big Olympic Dam mine.
