Yelena Furman, a New York woman accused of helping Canadian Myron Gushlak as he set up the fraudulent sale of a shell company from prison, has pleaded guilty. She entered the plea in a brief court appearance in Miami on Tuesday, Jan. 23. The judge allowed her to remain free on bond.

Prosecutors claimed that Ms. Furman was part of a scheme in which she helped Mr. Gushlak with several transactions related to the sale of a shell that became Biozoom Inc., a purported biotechnology company. After the sale, others ran a $34-million pump-and-dump with the company, the government said. (All figures are in U.S. dollars.) The stock went to a $4.50 high in 2013 before the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission halted it.

In pleading guilty, Ms. Furman has admitted to helping Mr. Gushlak during a four-year effort to sell Biozoom as a shell. Her plea agreement, filed on Jan. 23, 2018, describes her role in the scheme as starting relatively simply. In 2008, she recruited her sister-in-law to serve as the chief executive officer of Biozoom's predecessor. The document lists the sister-in-law as a straw CEO who had no real authority over the company. She was simply acting on Mr. Gushlak's instructions.
