Booming Chinese smelting pushed world refined zinc market to surplus in Q1 2020 - ILZSG

Global refined zinc production exceeded consumption by 240,000 tonnes in January-March this year in large part due to a rise in Chinese smelting of the metal, the International Lead & Zinc Study Group said in its latest market roundup.

Refined zinc production the world over rose to 3.314 million tonnes in the first quarter, up from 3.212 million in the same period of 2019. Meanwhile, usage for the galvanizing metal lagged, falling to 3.074 million tonnes from last year's figures of 3.204 million tonnes.
