Brazil's aluminium premiums poised to rise on Albras' production cut, soaring US Midwest premium

Brazil's aluminium premiums have returned to 2015 levels and are expected to rise further in the short term due to supply disruption in the country and soaring US Midwest premiums.

Hydro's Albras smelter announced on Tuesday April 10 that it is reducing its aluminium production by half due to alumina supply constraints. The curtailment represents 230,000 tonnes on an annualized basis, roughly 25% of Brazil's total aluminium production last year.The decision comes just over a month after Hydro's Alunorte refinery was forced to cut its alumina output by 50% due to alleged water contamination in Brazil's northern state of Par??.
