Brazilian authorities evacuate 700 people living near tailings dams in Minas Gerais state

Concerns about the security of 'upstream' iron ore tailings dams in the state of Minas Gerais have prompted the evacuation of residents from nearby communities, Brazil's national mining agency ANM said on Friday February 8.

Inspections were carried out by mine operators - Vale and ArcelorMittal - and ANM, which then co-ordinated the evacuation proces with the municipal and state authorities.One dam is at Vale's Gongo Soco mine, which halted production in April, 2016, according to the miner. The unit is in the city of Bar??o de Cocais, 140km away from Brumadinho, where a tailings dam rupture at the company's C??rrego do Feij??o mine in January led to the deaths of 157 people.The other dam is linked...
