Brazilian rebar price steady on tough monthly negotiations

The Brazilian domestic price for steel rebar was unchanged in September, with producers and buyers in a tug of war amid a global downturn and efforts to prevent oversupply in the market.

Fastmarkets' price assessment for steel reinforcing bar (rebar) domestic, monthly, delivered Brazil held at 5,100-5,310 Reais ($972-1,012) per tonne on Friday September 10, compared with August 13, when it fell to that level from 5,560-5,690 Reais per tonne on July 9.

While some smaller mills had offers reported at 5,370-5,500 Reais per tonne in September, the majority of volumes for the month were sold within the assessed the range. At least one market participant said he was expecting to buy more at prices slightly below 5,100...
