Brazilian steel industry to move forward on cutting carbon emissions

The Brazilian steel industry intends to contribute to a reduction in greenhouse-gas (GHG) emissions in order to lower the country's carbon footprint, the steelmakers' association, Instituto A??o Brasil, said on Wednesday September 29.

The methods to cut emission will include developing a strong local carbon credit market and moving forward with higher scrap and charcoal usage, as well as improving energy efficiency via renewable sources, the industry group added.
According to A??o Brasil, the country already has a smaller carbon footprint compared to other steel industries in the world. A 2019 study from the World Steel Association found that the steel industry emits an average 1.83 tonne of carbon dioxide per tonne of crude steel produced. A??o Brasil says its sectoral average is 1.72 tonne of carbon dioxide per tonne of steel.
