China alumina price diverts on opaque market

The China alumina market split into different directions this week with higher deals pulling up the high end while weak demand from other aluminium producers dragged the low end down, sources said on Thursday May 28.

Fastmarkets' weekly price assessment for alumina metallurgical grade, ddp China was 2,150-2,250 yuan ($300-314) per tonne on May 28, widening on both sides from 2,180-2,230 yuan per tonne a week earlier. Before the latest movement, however the price had remained unchanged since May 7.

"We heard a big consumer bought alumina at 2,250 yuan per tonne for 10,000 tonnes today, alongside several orders done earlier this week, which may push the price up," an alumina trader in northern China told...
