CHINA AUTO: Chip shortage hits vehicle output, sales in May

Chinese automotive production and sales figures both fell on a monthly and annual basis, although figures for new energy vehicles still increased, according to the data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM).

Carmakers produced 2.04 million units in May, down by 8.70% month on month and 6.80% year on year, while sales came to 2.13 million units, down by 5.50% from April 2021, and also down by 3.10% from May 2020, CAAM said.
In the year to May 2021, Chinese automotive output totaled 10.63 million units, up by 36.40% from the year before, while China's automotive sales came to 10.88 million units, up by 36.60% year on year, CAAM data showed.

The association said the main reason for the decline in output and sales in May 2021 was a lack of semiconductor chips used for on-board electronic equipment. The shortage of chips will continue affect production in June and the situation might ease from the end of the third or the fourth quarters, CAAM said. The association is keeping a cautiously...
