China's MIIT warns of alumina oversupply in 2020 on weak aluminium consumption

China faces an oversupply of alumina this year because of reduced demand for aluminium, according to a government report released last week.

A restriction on the expansion of alumina capacity could offer a solution to the situation, according to an aluminium operations summary report released by the raw materials department of China's Ministry of Industry & Information Technology (MIIT).
"The outlook for downstream aluminium consumption is not good in 2020, while the risk of overcapacity in the aluminium industry chain still exists," the summary said.
"The industry as a whole will adhere to the requirements of [the government's] central economic conference to restrict the disorderly expansion of alumina production capacity and to accelerate the development and application of high-end aluminium products used in the aviation and automotive sectors," it added.
