Chinese aluminium alloys entering US face fourfold hit from new tariffs

Aluminium alloys from China will be subject to at least 20% in tariffs by September while for hundreds of steel products it will be at least 35% if the latest round of tariffs threatened against China take effect, sources indicated to Fastmarkets.

That is because the new tariffs US President Donald Trump signaled against China will be on top of the Section 232 tariffs under an earlier act that cover imports in general, at a rate of 10% for aluminium and 25% for steel. Those, plus two types of applicable duty, make for a forthcoming fourfold handicap on more than a dozen aluminium alloys and hundreds of semi-finished steel products.Aluminium costs in the United States, including the benchmark 6063 extrusion billet upcharge, are most likely to be affected since very little Chinese steel comes to the US at present because of all the existing charges.
