COBALT INSTITUTE CONF 2021: China's batteries will have adequate recycled cobalt to meet EU circularity scrutiny - panelists

Battery materials producers in China will have enough recycled cobalt to meet the minimum threshold of the recycled material used in batteries as required by upcoming battery regulations in the European Union, panelists said at the annual Cobalt Institute conference.

As part of initiatives regarding battery circularity, it is proposed from January 1, 2027, batteries with over 2 kWh capacity containing cobalt will need to be accompanied with information showing that a certain amount of the cobalt used was recovered from waste, both for battery models and per batch at manufacturing plant. The minimum threshold for recycled cobalt in batteries will be introduced at 12% from January 2030,...
