Codelco to extend Chuquicamata mine life, produce additional 30,000 t

Chilean copper producer Codelco has decided to extend the mine life of the open-pit operation of Chuquicamata for one year, producing 30,000 tonnes more than previously planned, the company said on Thursday November 12.

The state-owned miner initially expected to completely shift to underground exploration of the unit in December 2020, but some design adjustments and the current performance of the 105-year-old open-pit mine led to an additional year of operations, Codelco said,...
