Community blockade halts zinc, lead, silver mining at Buenaventura mine in Peru

Peruvian miner Buenaventura's Uchucchacua zinc, lead and silver mine in the center of the country has been put under blockade by members of the local community, halting all mining and logistics activity at the site.

Access to the mine has been blocked by members of the Oy??n province community since September 13, with only essential operations still being carried out, Buenaventura said on Wednesday September 22.

The mining company and the local community have entered what is termed a communal enterprise, which is a form of co-operative venture intended to increase efficiency and develop trust across both the farming and mining businesses. But members of the community...
