Colorado School of Mines is teaming up with the Colorado Department of Education to offer free computer science workshops for elementary school teachers across the state this year and the partnership was the subject of a recent story in The Colorado Sun.
Tracy Camp, professor and head of the Computer Science Department, developed the curriculum for the workshops, which includes hands-on training in CS Unplugged, a collection of free learning activities that help teach computational thinking without the use of a computer.

While there are state standards for high school computer science courses, it's voluntary in Colorado. Camp is hoping that changes and computer science becomes part of every school's curriculum.
"Students need to learn how to read, they need to learn how to write and they need to learn how to code," Camp said. "That's my thinking."
