The Investor’s Edge: Why Thoughtful Stock Picking Still Matters

452% as we write and 726% at its peak in late September.

That’s what a single stock has gained since we highlighted it for our readers.

It wasn’t Tesla (TSLA) or market darling NVIDIA (NVDA) as many would have guessed.

It was a hidden gem you’re unlikely to hear about from the mass media or your financial advisor.

Stocks like this can deliver life-changing gains to investors.

Yet picking winners is not easy. With focused effort, however, it’s doable.

We’re here to help investors make better choices.

As a bonus, we also show a service that can help uncover more hidden gems in the resources sector.

Passive Investing

Most people rely on their financial advisors to choose investments that match their risk profile.

Too often, these “professionals” push products that generate higher fees for them. Whether it’s a fund from the bank they work for or a third-party product with better compensation.

We don’t blame them, but we also wouldn’t rely exclusively on their advice.

At the end of the day, you’ll be offered a variety of equity and bond funds that fit your investment horizon and risk appetite.

There’s nothing wrong with that.

However, these balanced portfolios are unlikely to outperform market benchmarks.

To beat the returns offered by a financial advisor, investors are often better off picking their own stocks. It’s riskier, but it offers higher upside potential.

Unfortunately, portfolio managers rarely provide deep research on individual small-cap stocks.

Those reports are typically produced for institutions, not for retail investors.

Smaller companies are often off analysts’ radars, so even major banks may have no coverage.

That’s where private investors can have an edge.

They can find overlooked companies that may deliver substantial gains.

Our Method

Picking stocks isn’t easy for private investors.

With focus and discipline, however, it can change your investment game.

The Canadian Mining Report is here to help with that research and due diligence.

Our team has decades of combined experience in the mining sector. We perform rigorous valuations of companies we bring to our readers, including analysis of:

  • Management and technical teams.
  • Projects the company is developing.
  • Political risk.
  • Financial strength.
  • Share structure.
  • Investment thesis and more.

Using our stock-pricing approach has delivered large gains for readers who followed it closely. One example is Midnight Sun Mining (TSXV:MMA, OTCQB:MDNGF), which we researched in 2023.

You can find the initial research here:

A Critical Element of a Massive Megatrend

(Disclaimer: note that Midnight Sun compensated Canadian Mining Report for this research).

Midnight Sun’s share price gained over 700% at its peak in September after our report went live.

The company’s team continues to advance the Dumbwa target at its flagship Solwezi project in Zambia and has reported promising drill results, including good copper intercepts:

  • DBW-25-003: 5.2 meters of 0.29% copper and 25.9 meters of 0.48% copper.
  • DBW-25-007: 16 meters of 0.31% copper and 23 meters of 0.33% copper, and 39.7 meters of 0.51% copper (including 7.0 meters of 1.13% copper).

These results were released on October 1, and more drill results are pending.

At the Kazhiba zone, Midnight Sun’s 2024 drill program returned:

  • MSZ22-028: 21 metres of 10.69% copper.
  • MSZ22-020: 26 meters of 5.60% copper.
  • MSZ22-012: 15 meters of 3.01% copper.
  • MSZ22-030: 7.0 meters of 4.66% copper.

The company has recently closed a C$30.5 million private placement. It’s now well-funded to advance Solwezi.

The company keeps tracking copper, providing leverage to the price of the underlying metal.

We hope readers had a chance to participate and either book profits or remain positioned for significant gains today.

Takeaway

Don’t get this wrong — picking individual stocks is risky, but it can be highly rewarding.

That said, don’t bet the farm on these.

At Canadian Mining Report, we strive to bring you overlooked stocks with strong upside potential.
