The diamond and specialty minerals stocks box score for Wednesday was an 87-87-114 draw. The TSX Venture Exchange fell six points to 893 while polished diamond prices reclaimed 0.3 per cent from yesterday's 2.5-per-cent drop. Sandy MacDougall's Alba Minerals Ltd. (AA) jumped 6.5 cents to 32 cents on 2.29 million shares. The company is touting geophysical results from its Quiron II lithium brine project in Argentina.

Brian Dalton and Jeff Baker's Altius Minerals Corp. (ALS), unchanged at $14.02 on 70,000 shares, will complete a technical report covering its Lynx diamond project in Northern Manitoba. If all goes well, the company could be drilling this spring. Altius acquired the 60,800-hectare project last year from a group of prospectors based in Western Canada.

One of the prospectors found a microdiamond 10 years ago from an eight-kilogram chip sample of a conglomerate volcaniclastic rock, but they were unable to generate much interest in the story, despite -- or perhaps because of -- the multimillion-dollar effort mounted in the area by previous explorers in the early 2000s. (They failed to find a single diamond.) The prospectors collected a few more samples in 2016 and a 16-kilogram batch of rock produced 144 microdiamonds, a find that generated some noise on last winter's dog and pony circuit, leading to the deal with Altius.
