Diamond Fences Jailed in US, Ordered to Pay $7m

(IDEX Online) - Five men who bought diamonds stolen in a series of violent robberies across the USA have been jailed, and ordered to pay over $7m in restitution. They fenced the gems and laundered money for a notorious organized gang known as the South American Theft and Robbery Group (SATG).Its members preyed on traveling jewelry salesman. They held one at gunpoint before beating him to death in Irving, Texas.The five men involved in fencing the jewels were sentenced to a combined total of 190 months in federal prison following an FBI investigation, said Prerak Shah, Acting US Attorney for the Northern District of Texas.A total of 20 SATG robbers who targeted traveling diamond and jewelry salesmen throughout the United States have been convicted and sentenced.
