Digital register LMEpassport to launch in 2021, starting with aluminium

LMEpassport, a new digital register for physical metals data, is to be rolled out by the London Metal Exchange in 2021, starting with aluminium and gradually phasing in other metals over the next three years.

The digital register - part of a sustainability package that includes a spot trading platform and new contracts - is designed to provide a centralized transparency source, the data from which will form the basis of future access to sustainable metals via the LME's proposed online marketplace.
The announcement follows a discussion paper launched in August and open for comment until the end of September.
Matthew Chamberlain, chief executive officer of the LME, told Fastmarkets that a fundamental reason the exchange was launching the package was to protect its existing revenue sources and franchise.

"I strongly believe that if we left it to others to launch low-carbon aluminium platforms and producers to sell low-carbon brands at a premium to the LME, that's fine until every tonne of aluminium is sustainable and the LME is left with an old specification that isn't consistent with what anyone is trading; then we're irrelevant," he...
