West Texas Intermediate crude for February delivery gained 12 cents to $63.49 on the New York Merc, while Brent for March gained 42 cents to $69.03 (all figures in this para U.S.). Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $26.75 to WTI ($36.74), up from a discount of $24.75. Natural gas for February gained four cents to $3.22. The TSX energy index closed up a fraction to 195.95.

Among the most active oil and gas producers were Cenovus Energy Inc. (CVE), up 16 cents to $12.95 on 6.37 million shares; Crescent Point Energy Corp. (CPG), up 20 cents to $10.79 on 5.51 million shares; and Baytex Energy Corp. (BTE), up seven cents to $4.14 on 5.11 million shares. Meanwhile, pipeline company Kinder Morgan Canada Ltd. (KML) lost 52 cents to $17.39 on 674,300 shares, as the National Energy Board (NEB) began its hearings about the company's federally approved but locally contested Trans Mountain pipeline extension. The hearings will take eight days, and then the NEB will hold more hearings in March.
