Energy transition creating new rivalries, winners and losers

Morgan Bazilian, director of the Payne Institute of Public Policy at Colorado School of Mines, was the co-author of a recent commentary piece in the journal Nature exploring the geopolitics of the energy transition.

The article, "Model and manage the changing geopolitics of energy," was published in the May 2 issue of the prestigious journal. Bazilian wrote the piece with international colleagues Michael Bradshaw of the University of Warwick (UK), Andreas Goldthau of the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies in Germany, and Kirsten Westphal of the German Institute for International and Security Affairs.

"To minimize conflict and maximize equity, states' policy choices over the next decade will be crucial. Researchers and decision-makers should widen their focus to examine the implications of such alternative pathways to decarbonization - issues that go well beyond technology. Smoothing the road will take multilateral agreements, generous funding and cooperation."
