ENERGY TRANSITION: EC official advises US to consider carbon-pricing measures

Market-based measures to help efforts to decarbonize would probably work well in the United States, according to the vice president of the European Commission.

Frans Timmermans said that he had discussed the concept of the US introducing a carbon-pricing mechanism of some kind with members of the Senate Climate Solutions Caucus in Washington DC on Thursday September 23.
"I said to the Senators, somehow, we're going to give people an incentive to decarbonize, and a price mechanism seems to me the best way of doing it," he told a webinar hosted by think tank the Atlantic Council later that same day.
"You can use regulations, you can use taxation but, for the EU, [a price mechanism] works well, and since the US economy is also based on market principles, it might want to consider looking at comparable measures," he said.
