EU complains to WTO that Indonesia's nickel export ban will hurt EU stainless steel sector

The European Union has launched a complaint to the World Trade Organization (WTO) against Indonesian export restrictions on raw materials used in the production of stainless steel, the European Commission (EC) said on November 22.

The EC claims that the restrictions unfairly limit European stainless steel producers' access to raw materials, including nickel as well as scrap, coal and coke, iron ore and chromium.

"The export restrictions imposed by Indonesia put jobs in the EU's steel industry at risk. Despite our concerted efforts, Indonesia has maintained the measures in place and even announced a new export ban for January 2020. We must now act to ensure that international trade rules are respected. That's why today we are taking a legal action in the WTO to get these measures removed as soon as possible," European commissioner for trade Cecilia Malmstr??m...
