The fossil-free steel initiative joint venture known as Hybrit - comprising SSAB, LKAB and Vattenfall - has completed successful trials of fossil-free fuels in the iron ore pellet process, it announced on Wednesday August 5.

The companies reported that trials using fossil-free fuels at LKAB's pellet plant in Malmberget, Sweden, have shown that the first fossil-free iron ore pellets are within reach.
The project is intended to be the world's first with a value chain for fossil-free (or 'green') steel, using sustainable or renewable energy along with hydrogen in the steelmaking process, and has ambitions to reduce Sweden's carbon dioxide emissions by 10%.
