EU GREEN STEELMAKING: Liberty's Rotherham site aims for 1 mln tpy output via green strategy

Liberty Steel Group UK, part of the GFG Alliance, hopes to double production at its Rotherham site to more than 1 million tonnes per year after altering its product mix to produce rebar while reducing its carbon emissions, the company said on Monday June 22.

It has upgraded its Thrybergh Bar Mill in Rotherdam to produce rebar from September onward. This follows a series of successful trials of its Greensteel strategy through investments intended to expand its product mix and to make more productive use of its rolling mills so as to target attractive market segments. This would include looking into the production of wire rod.
Liberty Steel plans to be carbon-neutral by 2030 and hopes to achieve this through its Greensteel strategy, which consumes local scrap steel in electric-arc furnaces (EAFs), powered by renewable or low-carbon energy sources to reduce emissions.
