EU GREEN STEELMAKING: Liberty signs MoU to explore hydrogen-based operations in France

Liberty Steel, part of the GFG Alliance, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with plant builder Paul Wurth and holding company Stahl-Holding-Saar (SHS) to develop a hydrogen-based steelmaking plant at its site in Dunkirk, France, the company said on Monday February 22.

Paul Wurth is part of equipment provider SMS Group and has a partnership with hydrogen technology provider Sunfire, while SHS owns German steelmakers Dillinger and Saarstahl.
Under the agreement, the companies will assess the development of a 1GW hydrogen electrolysis plant and a 2 million-tonnes-per-year direct reduced iron (DRI) plant next to Liberty's Alvance Aluminium site in Dunkirk.
Liberty acquired the Dunkirk aluminium operations in late 2018 and its steel operations adopted a neutral-carbon business strategy as part of its carbon-neutral 2030 goals.
